We are a group of
passionate researchers.
We are passionate about understanding the challenges women continue to confront in achieving equality in modern society. In particular, we focus on the causes and consequences of everyday violence against women and how policy can to used to eliminate violence throughout our society. We aim to ask policy-relevant questions about how to improve women's lives and answer those questions using innovative methodologies.
Our Culture
Passion
We expect all researchers to be passionate and curious about their chosen topic area, regardless on whether it relates to everyday violence against women. We believe that people do their best work when they are passionate and interested in it.
Innovative Methodologies
Measuring and researching everyday violence against women is difficult. We, therefore, combine a variety of innovative methodologies including causal and observational analysis, survey work, and qualitative interviews to uncover the linkages between violence and policy. It is important to us that our methods fit the questions we are asking and that these questions are meaningful and help women.
Communicative Collaboration
Our work centers partnerships and collaborations, either within the lab, with advocates and practitioners DV organizations, or with the survivors we work with. Our group believes that open, honest and kind communication helps to foster better relationships between collaborators and therefore, produces better research and work.

Opportunities
-
We are always happy to hear from enthusiastic undergraduates, who potentially want to work with us for course credit!
Interested undergraduate students can send an email to Professor Barnes with the subject line “Prospective Student: Your Name” with a CV and a brief description of yourself and how your interests intersect with the lab’s research. Please allow one week for a response before you follow-up.
-
Given the current and ongoing uncertainty surrounding funding, we currently do not have any positions for graduate students.
But we are always happy to chat with grad students, particularly when their interests overlap with the lab.
